Health Campaigns Digitalization

Leaving No One Behind

We noticed that, ahead of a health campaign, the more accurate the data collected from the field is, the fewer beneficiaries will be missed.

This requires a comprehensive micro-planning process before deploying staff on the ground.

Bluesquare facilitates the transition from traditional paper-based processes to more streamlined digital workflows across several successful large-scale use-cases.

Digitalization makes vaccination, disease control, and nutritional campaigns more effective and responsive, ensuring that essential data is available for timely decision-making.

Our experience with IASO, DHIS2, and other tools make campaigns more efficient and ensure that no one is left behind.

We digitalized campaigns for interventions ranging from vaccination efforts against polio, measles, yellow fever, as well as the introduction of malaria vaccine to distribution initiatives like Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs) and Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC).

Geo-enabled Campaign Digitalization
  • Update key data from the field (population, equipment available, stocks, etc.)
  • Fill out geo-targeted and detailed microplans with latest data
  • Assign teams according to each location needs ahead of the campaign
  • Monitor campaign rollout with real-time data visualization, including the most remote areas
  • Detect missed or underperforming areas and deploy mop-ups teams as needed
  • Evaluate campaign overall performance
  • Reuse key data from this campaign to plan the next

We have successfully digitalized campaigns in Burundi, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mali and Niger

What Bluesquare Offers for Campaign Digitalization

At the core of our campaign digitalization efforts is IASO, a versatile geographic data management platform, integrated with DHIS2, and designed to support health campaigns efficiently

Bottom-up Feedback Loop

Bluesquare provides a structured methodology for country programs to create recognizable documents (spreadsheets and PDFs) that maintain familiarity for end users by leveraging previous efforts. Using IASO, field teams can update reference data through the IASO mobile application and visualize the impacts of their work in comprehensive micro-plans. This helps identify data gaps, leading to further improvements. This iterative process culminates in a detailed and accurate georegistry reusable and enhanceable for subsequent campaigns.

Geo-enabled Campaign Microplanning

IASO offers tools to make data collection precise, using advanced geographic structuring to capture detailed information from the field. This ensures that each data point is accurately mapped before the campaign. In Cameroon, for example, IASO was used to map special populations, identify hard-to-reach and high-risk areas, and track under-vaccinated communities and zero-dose children.

Assign activities according to geographies

By defining catchment areas ahead of campaigns, IASO enables health teams to concentrate on specific zones, ensuring comprehensive coverage. Its microplanning capabilities enable field agents using the IASO mobile application to focus on pre-assigned areas and report their activities. This approach has been successfully applied in settings like the Cameroon EPI digitalization project, where decentralized collaboration was key to improving campaign outcomes.

Integration with DHIS2

Bluesquare’s extensive experience with DHIS2 ensures that IASO is fully integrated with this widely used health information system. This integration allows campaign data to flow seamlessly into DHIS2, providing a complete view of health indicators and campaign progress. The ability to import and merge data from various sources, such as DHIS2, official village lists, and geographic boundaries, ensures that campaigns are built on a solid data foundation.

Offline Data Collection

Understanding that many campaigns occur in areas with limited connectivity, IASO is designed to work offline, ensuring that data collection continues even in remote locations. This has been instrumental in hard-to-reach areas to ensure that no one is left behind.

Geo-Based User Management

IASO supports decentralized data collection activities, enabling teams to work independently across regions. Geo-based user management ensures that data collection is well-coordinated and targeted, allowing users to be assigned and focused based on their geographic responsibilities.

Our Broader Experience in Campaign Digitalization

DHIS2

We have implemented campaign digitalization, for example in Mali for millions of patients, using DHIS2 Tracker, assisting with managing and monitoring health campaigns effectively. We are one of the recommended hosting providers for DHIS2. More information here. We have a strong team of DHIS2 experts that can support your digitalization effort.

Other tools

Bluesquare has experience implementing other tools like the DIGIT HCM platform that we are implementing in Burundi, or ODK that we have largely deployed across many Performance Based Financing projects in more than 10 countries.

Our Approach

Bluesquare takes a practical and adaptable approach to health campaign digitalization, focusing on

icon
Sustainability
Our open-source solutions, like IASO, are designed to be maintained with accessible technical skills, similar to DHIS2, and can be hosted locally if required.
icon
Adaptability and Scalability
IASO accommodates standard geographic data files, tailored questionnaires, and workflows, making it suitable for various project sizes. It also supports BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) practices to facilitate flexible data collection.
icon
Field-Tested Solution
IASO has been deployed in multiple campaigns and health initiatives, handling campaigns with millions of form submissions and supporting mobile application user bases of up to 12,000 users.
